About.
What’s it all about?
Deakin University’s Centre for Social and Early Emotional Development (SEED) and the AFL have joined forces to conduct a world-first study into the mental health and wellbeing of young (aged 16 to 25) Australian Rules footballers (AFL MH&W Study). This research will bridge a major gap in understanding how we can help support the wellbeing and healthy development of young people playing football. This scientific study will be conducted over three years and will contribute to international and national understanding of how to support healthy development, both on and off the field!
How does it work?
Young Australian Rules Footballers are asked to complete a 20-30 min online survey once every three months over a period of up to three years. The survey covers topics such as mental health and wellbeing, physical health, social relationships, work and education, drug and alcohol use, and a range of factors which can influence the social and emotional development of young footballers. Collecting such a broad range of information regularly across this period of time will give us world-first insight into ways we can maximise the wellbeing and healthy development of young people at all levels of Australian Rules Football participation, and sport participation generally.
Who can get involved?
Anyone aged 16-25 years who plays Australian Rules Football at any level can join the study. We are aiming to get as many players as possible to participate across all playing levels. This will allow us to get the most accurate picture of the how young footballers in Australia are travelling, and what strategies we can put in place to best meet the needs of these young people.
How can I participate?
You can join the study by clicking the link or scanning the QR code at the bottom of this page. If you are eligible to participate you can read the finer details of what is involved, and if you wish to take part you will be taken to your first survey. Participation is entirely voluntary. Participants can choose not to take part or to withdraw from the study at any point without this affecting their relationship with the AFL, Deakin University or their football club. If you are 16 years old, we will need consent from a parent or guardian to participate, which can be provided via the link or QR code below.
All participants who complete a survey go into a prize draw to win one of 36 prizes (e.g., 2x AFL tickets, $40 Coles or Rebel Sport voucher).
How else can I get involved?
Another great way to get involved in the study is to help us to spread the word. Share this website with friends and family who might like to participate. If you wish to get your club involved we have a range of resources including posters, social media templates and email templates which we would be more than happy to send through to help you get players involved. Just head to the contact page at the top right of this page and let us know you want to help us spread the word.
